Moving Data to a New PC

Moving Data to a New PC

As we acquire more and more data on our computers moving everything to a new machine can be a bit of a headache. Fortunately, there are several tools out there to help.

Microsoft has teamed up with Software Company Laplink to provide a data transfer tool called PCmover Express. Until 31 August 2016 you can download the PCmover Express program for free instead of paying £19.95.

This program allows you to wirelessly transfer folders and files from your old computer to a new one and even choose which files you want to transfer. Please note, the new computer must have Windows 8.1 or later and both computers need to be connected to the same Wireless Network.

There are of course other methods for transferring your data, especially if you are an Office 365 user, where all your data may already be securely stored in OneDrive. However, if you want to give PCmover a try we’ve put together a simple step by step guide to help you use PCmover Express to transfer your files.

To install PCmover Express, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/transfer-your-data and click Download. Then run the setup file.

If your computer hasn’t already got Microsoft Visual C++ then it will ask you to install this as well - click Install. When that’s finished, click next to install PCmover Express. Accept the licensing agreement, enter your name and email address and type Personal into the organisation field (assuming that you are using this for domestic purposes only). Click next and launch the program.

Once launched, PCmover Express will analyse the files and folders on your old computer. After the ‘Go to the new computer to proceed’ message, everything you do from now will be on your new computer which will also need to have PCmover Express installed on it. Enter the same details as you did when installing it on your old computer and select which Windows operating system your new computer runs on (either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10).

Select Wi-Fi, enter your broadband network’s name and click browse. You should be able to select your old computer. If it doesn’t appear in the list, PCmover Express on your old computer may be still ‘In Progress.’ If so, click re-scan and it will eventually come up in the list.

Now PCmover Express will be analysing the data from your old computer which may take a while to complete. When it’s finished there’ll be two transfer options: standard or full customisation.

Standard is recommended as it transfers your emails, documents, music, photos and videos and is more straightforward. Full customisation lets you change the default settings and have more control over what you transfer.

After selecting your preferred transfer option, the program will give you estimation of how long the transfer will take based on amount of data to be transferred and the speed of your internet connection. In a matter of hours, the transfer should be complete!

If you still need more help using this software, Microsoft recommend that you visit Laplink’s support page http://laplink.com/index.php/individuals/pcmover-for-windows/fta, or feel free to contact us.
